Why you should check your Florida condominium insurance

Do you live in a condominium and pay condo association fees? Do you know what those fees pay for and the things you’re still responsible for? Typically, part of your association fees pay for a Florida condominium insurance policy for protection against damage or destruction to the condo’s structure and property outside your unit, along with liability coverage if someone is injured on the common areas of the property.
Unfortunately, everything inside your unit isn’t covered by this policy, and if someone is injured while in your unit, you’re also not protected by their liability coverage. You need to purchase a condominium insurance policy to protect your possessions against theft, damage and destruction, ensuring it includes liability coverage too.
Before you race out and purchase an insurance policy you should take a look at your copy of the association’s insurance policy. Sometimes the policy may include coverage for built in cabinets and wardrobes or standard bathroom fixtures while in other cases, the fittings in the property may be your responsibility to insure.
Your own Florida condominium insurance policy should provide you with coverage against someone sustaining injury inside your unit. In case your unit becomes uninhabitable, you should also include coverage for alternative accommodation. Living in Florida you should also consider some peril coverage, in particular windstorm, flood and hurricane coverage.
